1. How do I access the admin interface?
In a web browser go to http://www.[yoursitename].umd.edu/cgi-bin/davadmin.pl.
This will take you to a secure connection and prompt you for your University
Directory ID and password. [Note: If your site is not part of the ".umd.edu"
domain, replace that with ".org", ".com", or ".net"
as applicable.] This is the same URL as the DAV admin tool - the two tools are
connected.
2. How do administrators manage access privileges?
Public access to the site is managed on a per-directory basis. Site administrators
can password-protect directories using login and password combinations of their
choosing.
To begin restricting access to directories, click on the "Public Access to Restricted Directories" link on the main administration page. This will lead you to a list of directories on your site. To browse subdirectories under, for example, htdocs (the directory where your place your web pages), simply click on the plus "+" sign next to that directory. A list of these directories will then appear, each of which may be restricted on an individual basis.
To password protect a directory, simply click on the "create access file" link next to the file of your choice. You will be taken to a new page through which you may establish a password and ID required for access.
To modify access, simply click on the "modify" link next to the appropriate directory. From this new screen you are able to delete or add users.
To delete all permissions for a particlar directory, simply click on the "delete" link next to the directory and it will then be freely accessible to the public.
3. How is this tool different from the DAV admin tool?
This tool manages public access to your site. It provides the ability to password-protect
directories to restrict public access to authorized users. The DAV
admin tool, on the other hand, manages editing privileges to your site.
So this tool restricts access by the public, and the DAV tool provides access
to your content editors. The following are some examples of users and activities
you can manage with these tools.

4. Do I have to use Directory IDs?
No, using this tool you can select any login-password combination you wish.
5. Can I use Directory IDs?
Not yet. This tool is not linked to the Directory at this time. WebHosting is
investigating the technical feasibility of allowing this feature.
6. How do I remove access restrictions once they are
in place?
Removing all public access restrictions is as easy as clicking [Delete] next
to a restricted directory within the tool.
